NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – The Region Six Administration is working towards a clean environment and safer roadways. This is according to the Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha, who said that the indiscriminate dumping of garbage by both representatives of business entities and residents in some locations such as the Number 19 Highway and sections of New Amsterdam, is under scrutiny.The Administration is soon to put watchdogs in place and once caught, the culprits would face the full force of the law. Two months ago the Regional Administration embarked on the campaign which began on the Number 19 Highway on the East Coast of Berbice.So far, sections of East Canje including Palmyra,Wholesale China Jerseys, the Upper Corentyne-Lancaster/Hogstye,Wholesale Hockey Jerseys, Bush Lot/ Number 28,Brian Poole Falcons Jersey UK, Maida/Tarlogie, Macedonia/Joppa were completed.The teams are now working in the Black Bush Polder, Number 52/74 and Crabwood Creek areas.The exercise would eventually fan out to other sections of the administrative region. The Corriverton Town Council was advised to undertake the exercise in that municipality where the Community Enhancement Workers are to do the job.The Administration is also addressing the issue of stray animals on the thoroughfares. Six pounds are now in operation – Maida/Tarlogie,Cheap Jerseys China, Number 52/74, Number 51/Good Hope,Cheap Authentic Jerseys, Crabwood Creek, Mibicuri and Yakusari. The ones at Maida/Tarlogie and Crabwood Creek were both renovated at a cost of $4M each by the Region Six Administration. Come 2010, new facilities are to be set up at Adventure, Whim and Number 19 Villages, Reliance and Ordnance/Fort Lands at an estimated $10 million.According to the Regional Chairman, efforts are being made to erect a pound in New Amsterdam.This is to be done in tandem with the New Amsterdam Town Council.The process has started in the Corentyne area to secure stray catchers. Mustapha said that with the pounds in place, already dozens of animals were already impounded. The exercise would continue until some control can be had.Meanwhile, based on the agreement of the contract to rehabilitate the Corentyne Highway from New Amsterdam to Moleson Creek, several signs are to be erected to identify villages, and reflectors have also been placed along the roadway. The work on the highway was completed last month.The first phase, New Amsterdam to Number 36 Village was done at a US$22.4M cost. The second stage-Number 36 Village to Moleson Creek was to the tune of US $17 million. DIPCON worked on several sections of the entire project while B.K. International did from Number 36 to Number 65 Village and Kerannauth Construction Firm – Number 66 Village to Moleson Creek.The Regional Chairman said that the maintenance crew is now looking at defects which must be rectified during this the liability period.Also in keeping with the clean-up operation, the Region Six Administration is trying to demolish all illegal and dilapidated structures on reserves belonging to Government. This programme also began two months ago. So far, a number of persons have complied with the 14-day order of notices served by the relevant agencies. On the other hand, there were those who did not, and their structures are to be torn down.At Number 78 Village there is a particular location which is used for illicit activities and this has raised some concerns. A number of persons were said to have been robbed and even molested in its vicinity. This is one such structure that will be pulled down. Another illegal structure in the vicinity of the Number 66 Inshore Fish Port Complex is to be dismantled by mid-week. Notice was served to the owner two weeks ago.Also under this initiative, all sign boards are to be removed with the exception of those belonging to Churches, Mosques, Temples and schools along with road signs and the names of villages. The illegal sign removal campaign is to run for another month by which time the objective is expected to be realised.
