… records 11 maternal deathsThe Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) has reported the successful delivery of 6,085 babies in the year 2014. There was the total delivery of 6,179 infants of which 94 were stillborn. Additionally, the hospital recorded 11 maternal deaths.GPHC is the nation’s largest state –owned health care institution. The hospital reiterated its commitment to the public and looks forward to providing more quality service in 2015.Eighteen maternal deaths occurred in 2013. Of those, 10 occurred at GPHC, and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Shamdeo Persaud had stated at the time that the number was “way too high.” The Ministry of Health has vowed to bring the instances of maternal deaths to zero.Targeting maternal deaths is one of the UN’s Millennium Development Goals (MDG). This year has been identified as the deadline for the attainment of eight targets.
