– US attorney?Guyanese drug accused Shaheed Roger Khan who pleaded guilty to 18 counts of drug trafficking and other charges, accepted a plea bargain primarily because he did not want to spend the rest of his life in a United States jail.Shaheed Roger KhanThis is according to his attorney, Diarmuid White,China Jerseys Wholesale, who was instrumental in brokering the deal.White told this newspaper that Khan was facing a life sentence on each of the 18 counts of drug trafficking if he was found guilty and to be assured that he would be able to return to his homeland before he died he opted for the deal.“He loves his country. If he was sentenced to life,NFL Jerseys China, it would have devastated him,” White told this newspaper. From all indications there was enough evidence in a least one of the indictments to send Khan to jail for life. He explained that even if Khan was acquitted on 17 of the indictments,Wholesale Jerseys, he could still have received a life sentence on the remaining one.The attorney had previously told this newspaper that it is unlikely that his client will testify in the trial of Robert Simels who is facing charges of obstruction, following a taped conversation in which he allegedly indicated an interest to harm one of the witnesses in the Roger Khan drug trafficking case.He said that testifying in the Robert Simels trial was not a part of the plea-bargaining deal, which was reached earlier this week with US Prosecutors.“Co-operation (in the Simels case) was not part of the plea bargaining deal. Theoretically, prosecutors could subpoena him but that is highly unlikely,” the attorney told Kaieteur News, without giving further details.Yesterday, White stated that the length of the sentence was also one of the major factors influencing the deal.He said that suggestions that the Prosecution was seeking to get information from Khan in return for a possible lighter sentence were not entirely accurate.“It’s not that the (US) government demanded anything,” White indicated.Khan’s local attorney, Vic Puran, had earlier disclosed that in the initial stages of the drug trafficking case, holesale Soccer Jerseys, the prosecutors had hinted that Khan would have received a 20-year sentence in exchange for information.Vic Puran disclosed that he had visited Khan on several occasions in the United States after he was taken there in 2006 to face the drug trafficking charges. He said that when plea bargaining first came up in 2006, he had advised Khan that that might be the right way to go, pointing out that to go through with a trial may have been very costly.US District Court Judge Dora Irizarry has indicated that she could reject or accept the plea-bargaining deal on the basis of a probation report or pre-sentencing hearing. The judge told the court that if by the time the probation report is presented she could not in ‘clear conscience’ impose the 15-year sentence, she could and would reject the agreed sentence.Khan would then have the right to withdraw his guilty plea and proceed with a trial. However, Khan’s US attorney told Kaieteur News that the defence team is confident that Judge Irizarry will accept the deal.“The prospect of plea bargaining is always an underlying factor in any case. We anticipate that she will accept it. A lot of interests will be served,” the attorney explained. He informed that it is very likely that Khan, who is in good spirits at present,Wholesale NFL Jerseys, will be deported at the end of any sentence imposed.Judge Irizarry has not set a date for her ruling but according to White, the pre-sentencing hearing usually takes about six weeks after the deal and,NFL Jerseys Outlet, normally the judge will make a ruling one month later.
