The three-day commemoration began with prayer yesterday, and the following days will be filled with socialising, good foods and presents for Muslims countrywide.Muslims observe Eid-Ul-Adha to remember the willingness of Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son, Ishmael, as an act of obedience to God. A few traditions associated with Eid include sacrificing animals as did the Prophet Abraham, purchasing of new clothes for the festival and a gathering of friends and family together for a feast.Imam “Mufti” of the Kitty Masjid, Sajid Khan said Eid- Ul -Adha is celebrated through communal prayers and rituals, as well as by feasting and a repetition of Abraham’s animal sacrifice.On these occasions, one third of the meat is kept for the family, another third for relatives and friends, and the last portion for the poor, in accordance with the Muslim precept of “zakat” or alms-giving.He emphasized that Muslims commemorate and remember Abraham’s trials, by themselves slaughtering an animal such as a sheep, bull or goat.Another member of the Masjid, Dan Rahim, explained that one of Abraham’s main trials was to face the command of Allah (God) to kill his only son. Upon hearing this command, he prepared to submit to Allah’s will.When he was all prepared to do it, Allah revealed to him that his “sacrifice” had already been fulfilled. He had shown that his love for his Lord superseded all others that he would lay down his own life or the lives of those dear to him in order to submit to God.“Allah has given us power over animals and allows us to eat meat, but only if we pronounce His name at the solemn act of taking life. Muslims slaughter animals in the same way throughout the year. By saying the name of Allah at the time of slaughter, we are reminded that life is sacred.” Rahim underscored. “It is not their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah; it is your piety that reaches Him.”He further added that a true Muslim is one who submits his or herself completely to the Lord and is willing to follow Allah’s commands completely and obediently.
