As Cubans and Guyanese yesterday commemorated the Cubana Air Disaster which occurred 35 years ago, on October 6, 1976, calls were made for the mastermind of the terrorist attack, who is said to be roaming freely in Miami, USA,Arturo Vidal Jersey, to be extradited to Venezuela.According to the Cuban Ambassador to Guyana, His Excellency Raul Gortazar-Marrero, the confessed assassin and active terrorist,Bayern Munich Jerseys, Luis Posada Carriles, after “a ridiculous judgement brought by the United States Government” was freed of all charges made against him.The envoy contended that this is “cruel evidence of the double face of the American Politics in their apparent struggle against terrorism”.Attendees of the 35th Anniversary commemoration of the Cubana Air Disaster held at the Cuban Embassy in KingstonGortazar-Marrero pointed out that five Cubans remain under injustice. Thirteen years ago they were imprisoned in severe conditions in the US for their struggle against terrorism not only for what was done against Cuba, but to avoid terrorist acts of that type in the US.Meanwhile,Andrea Barzagli Jersey, the terrorists involved in the Cubana Air Disaster on October 6, 1976 were treated leniently. The Ambassador recounted that all 73 persons (57 Cubans,Aleix Vidal Jersey, 11 Guyanese and five North Koreans) traveling via air from Barbados to Jamaica were killed in the terrorist attack.Ambassador Gortazar-Marrero made these remarks yesterday at a function held at the Cuban Embassy in Guyana, Kingston, in commemoration of the 35th Anniversary of the tragedy.It was noted that four men were arrested in connection with the bombing and a trial was held in Venezuela: Freddy Lugo and Hernan Ricardo Lozano were sentenced to 20-year prison terms; Orlando Bosch was acquitted because of technical defects in the prosecution evidence, and now lives in Miami; and Luis Posada Carriles was held for eight years while awaiting final sentence, but eventually fled. Carriles was later charged for entering the US illegally but was released on April 19, 2007.According to Samuel Abdool, President, Guyana-Cuba Friendship Association, it is incomprehensible how America that supposedly acts swiftly against terrorism harbours and protects a terrorist. America has bluntly refused to extradite Luis Posada Carriles to Venezuela to be sentenced for the despicable crime.He stated that,Arjen Robben Jersey, “We are making an appeal again on the authorities in the United States of America to hasten this action firstly by deporting Luis Posada Carriles to Venezuela for justice to be served.”“We would be condoning this horrible act of terrorism if we do not speak out and continue the struggle for justice on this matter,” Abdool asserted emphatically.He related that the attack wiped out the dreams of Guyanese students from achieving their true potential of becoming Medical Doctors, as well as the notable young sports personalities,Juventus Jerseys, officials of Cuba and other prominent individuals who were aboard.The Government of Guyana reaffirmed its commitment to stand with the Cuban Government in calling for justice for the victims of that terror attack. Prime Minister Samuel Hinds joined in the appeal for the perpetrator to be brought to justice.He pointed out that this is just one of the many injustices meted out to Cubans, as he spoke against the economic embargo which the US imposed against the island nation decades ago.Prime Minster Hinds emphasised the Government’s appreciation for Cuba’s commitment to help Guyana in the areas of health and education despite its own economic challenges.Also standing in solidarity was the People’s Progressive Party Civic General Secretary and President Candidate, Donald Ramotar. He noted that since 2001 terrorism is being condemned as an instrument of struggle.Ramotar stated that “there cannot be ‘good terrorism’ or ‘bad terrorism’. The ideology behind terrorism must be removed”. He emphasised that the Americans also condemn terrorism but if the impact is to be felt on terrorism, those (terrorists) walking around freely in the US should be brought to justice.
