By Fareeza Haniff.The Guyana Rice Producers Association (GRPA) has taken legal action against a paddy agent,Maillot Psg Femme, who owes more than $6 million to some 26 farmers from Wakenaam for paddy he purchased from them last December.Kaieteur News understands that a verbal agreement was made between the agent and the rice farmers, where the agent purchased the paddy from the farmers at a fixed priced and sold it to millers in Essequibo.It was agreed between the two parties (farmers and the agent) that the agent would pay the farmers when the millers paid him for the paddy.However, this was not done. After the farmers realised that time had passed and they were still not paid by the agent, they complained to the Rice Producers Association.General Secretary of the GRPA, Dharamkumar Seeraj, told this publication yesterday that when the complaint was received, the GRPA and the rice board held several meetings with the agent,Maillot Psg Femme Personnalis?, where it was agreed that he would pay some money over to the farmers. The agent then paid $14 million to the farmers, but the $6 million outstanding has still not been paid.“The GRPA and the rice board took the agent to the millers who owed him and we ensured that the millers paid him so that the farmers could be paid in return. We even went to the bank where he (agent) had his account to ensure that the cheques he gave out to the farmers were honoured,” Seeraj said.As it relates to the outstanding $6 million,Nouveau Maillot Psg 2018/19, Seeraj said that the matter was reported to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID),Maillot Psg Personnalis?, Eve Leary, where statements were taken from each farmer. However, after seeking the advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the GRPA and the farmers were informed that the issue at hand is a civil matter and the police cannot get involved.According to Seeraj,James Rodriguez Trikot Damen, the matter is now being treated as a ‘breach of contract’ arrangement.The GRPA has now initiated legal recourse against the agent,Tee Shirt Psg Femme Personnalis?, and the rice board has already supported the action by providing legal counsel. Seeraj said that the matter will be dealt with in such a way that the farmers will have to be paid.
