By the time they realised what was happening the men had already kicked out the bars at the window and had made their way into the house.The family started to shout for thief and tried to secure themselves in the bedroom, by bracing against the door, even as the bandits pounded away. Indira Latchminarine said that she was not aware that her husband had been shot. The men then entered the bedroom and ordered the couple outside into the living room where they were forced to lie on the ground. ?The bandits then demanded money and jewellery.Indira said that she told the bandits that the money was downstairs. However, her husband told the bandits that the money was upstairs. He then gave them an undisclosed sum of cash.The bandits continued to make demands for more cash and jewellery. They also helped themselves to one pair of bangles, four finger rings, her husband’s wedding ring, a Samsung digital Camera and a Cell Phone.The woman said that the bandits had a gun and a knife. “The tall one had a gun while the short one had a knife”. She said the place was dark and as the bandits were about to leave one placed the knife to her neck and threatened to kill her. At that stage she had to beg for her life.The men then told them not to make any more noise or they would return to kill them.The family stated that this is the fifth time that bandits have robbed the house. They bemoaned the lack of response from the police.Neighbours said that they called the Reliance Police Station and were told to call New Amsterdam. Upon calling New Amsterdam they were told to call Reliance and that went on for some time.The bandits spent about 15 minutes in the house and the police arrived about 30 minutes after the bandits would have left.“When the police arrived they did not make an attempt to go after the bandits, they just went up stairs and took statements,” one neighbour said.Vijay Latchminarine was rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital where he was treated for injuries to his right index finger and sent away.
