The maximum amount of money government is spending on Mashramani 2009 is $40M, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony stated yesterday, even as he faces pocket-tight businessmen unwilling to dole out the usual millions for events associated with the occasion. The government’s spending on Mashramani is between $30-40 million, Dr Anthony revealed,Cheap NFL Jerseys China, but this amount seems meagre given that Mashramani is the country’s largest national festival and lacks innovation to reach to the heights of Trinidad and Tobago’s carnival. However, the Minister is still hoping that businesses which have been reluctant to come onboard will do so at the last minute. He is counting on the fact that with about 75,Wholesale Stitched NFL Jerseys, 000 persons expected to view the costume and float parade, businesses will see it as an opportunity to market their products.?At a press conference yesterday,Authentic Jerseys China, he downplayed the lack of corporate interest in Mashramani, and was all too happy to have entertainment group Hits and Jams by his side.Hits and Jams is one of the few private entities investing heavily in Mashramani. Most of the others participating are government ministries and other government entities.Hits and Jams Entertainment is planning to have a 500-strong contingent of revelers on the streets of the capital city on February 23 for the celebrations which mark the country’s 39th Republic anniversary.Minister Anthony hailed Hits and Jams’ collaboration with construction giant BK International and the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company.Noted designer Olympia Small-Sonaram is designing Hits and Jams’ costumes for the parade.Apart from their involvement in the Georgetown street revelry, Hits and Jams is putting on a mega concert on the evening of February 23 featuring R&B and Hip Hop singer T-Pain along with dancehall singer Serani. The concert is billed for the GCC Ground, Bourda, even as the organizers are still trying to find a way to pacify neighbours who complain whenever shows of this nature are planned for the venue.Dr Anthony describes the concert itself as an innovation, given that the music often associated with Mashramani is soca and calypso. While Mashramani is touted as a national event,NFL Jerseys Outlet, Dr Anthony was quick to offer his support to Hits and Jams even though he said the event will appeal to a “specific audience”.The Minister needs all the support he can get at this time, as sponsors and companies are not so eager to participate in Mashramani. He said one of the event’s biggest sponsors pulled out just two weeks ago. This is despite the fact that he wants to see a broader spectrum of events associated with Mashramani and he was clear that without public and corporate support the event would be stagnated. The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company is sponsoring the masquerade band competition, while Republic Bank is sponsoring the steelband competition.? Banks DIH Limited and Digicel have offered their support for the calypso competition,Wholesale Nike NFL Jerseys, while Ansa McAl has thrown its weight behind the soca competition. To those businesses that have not yet come onboard, Dr Anthony says they are missing a big opportunity.“It’s an investment that no company can go wrong with,Cheap Jerseys,” Anthony declared.

(Reprinted from The Guardian) A revolutionary multi-billion-pound fund should be set up to pay the owners of the world’s rainforests not to cut them down.A report by special adviser,China Jerseys, John Eliasch, says the scheme would be a comparatively cheap way to reduce climate change emissions and would also inject vital funds into developing countries to help alleviate poverty. The report says that a global carbon market could pay the tropical rainforests’ owners, or people living in, them to save and maintain the trees, which store carbon dioxide – the main contributor to climate change. In addition, saving the rainforests would help to control global rainfall patterns. They are also home to more than half the world’s species. The World Bank has estimated the cost of reducing deforestation by one fifth at $2bn-$20bn (£1.15bn-£11.5bn) a year, leading campaigners to calculate that halting the problem would cost up to $100bn a year. But the Eliasch review claims countries without forests could also benefit from a global forest emission trading system,Authentic Adidas Hockey Jerseys China, which would be relatively cheap compared with saving emissions at home.“Integrating forests within a global cap and trade system would create opportunities to tackle a large part of current CO2 emissions while at the same time delivering substantial finance to forest conservation and sustainable forest management,” says the report. “Forest carbon finance could also make a significant impact on reducing poverty through increased financial flows to developing countries.”The report marks a significant shift in the debate about saving rainforests,NFL Jerseys Supply, which has until now been dominated by charities and rich individuals – including Eliasch and the Cool Earth group he helped to set up – raising funds to buy forests, provoking outrage from some governments and local communities. The new model has been supported by some environmental campaigners and by the government of Guyana,Cheap NFL Jerseys, which last year offered to save its rainforests in return for payments from Britain. But others warn that it would allow developed countries to avoid tackling their own emissions.“These proposals offer countries the chance to buy their way out of reducing emissions through forest protection,Cheap Nike NFL Jerseys China,” said Greenpeace’s head of biodiversity, Andy Tait.“If relatively cheap forest credits were easily traded with other carbon units, they could ‘flood’ or otherwise destabilise the markets. This is likely to bring the price of carbon crashing down,Wholesale Authentic Jerseys, reducing incentives to invest in clean and renewable energy technologies in donor countries.”The Eliasch review says new research forecasts that without action to stop deforestation the problem would, by itself, generate enough carbon dioxide emissions to tip the planet over the level considered crucial to avoid more than 2C of warming. “Consequently…forests will need to form a central part of any global climate change deal,” it says.Deforestation contributes about 17% of global carbon emissions, the third biggest source behind power generation and industry, and bigger than either China or the United States, says the report. It forecasts the pressure on forests will increase as world population grows by more than 2.5 billion people in the next 40 years.

President’s College ended its celebrations of its 30th anniversary on Friday. In addition to assurances of Governmental support from Educational officials, Technical Advisor to the Minister of Education, Vincent Alexander, announced the proposed renaming of the school.Introduced as a school catering for the cr?me de la cr?me of primary school graduates, the educational institute was conceptualized by late President Forbes Burnham and first opened its doors on September 11,Cheap China Jerseys, 1985.Speaking to the assembly was Chief Education Officer, Olato Sam. He made it plain that with the new administration, the necessary assistance for President’s College would be forthcoming.“You will have the support of material and other resources to fulfill your true potential. As it is always said, the rest is up to you,” Sam said, while urging the current students to think seriously of the legacy they will each leave on the School. He also urged them to maintain their status and work hand in hand with the Ministry in order to move the President’s College agenda forward.Alexander proposed the renaming of the school to the Burnham Learned Community- President’s College, a gesture meant to commiserate with the former Head of State. President’s college is considered his brainchild. Alexander promised to pilot the proposal to the administration.Alexander noted that even while Burnham, a student, was the editor of Queen’s College school newspaper in the 1940s,Cheap NFL Jerseys, he wrote an article in his newspaper exploring an alternate School to QC- one which was better tailored to the needs of the populace. Hence the seed for President’s College was planted. Also taking the podium was the first ever Principal of President’s College, Oswald Kendall. He reflected on the value based education that students of President’s College received. Observing that students were securing passes in 15 and more CXC subjects these days at other institutions,Cheap Jerseys From China, Kendall asked the pertinent question of whether the humanity of these students was being developed, as well as their acumen.Principal Carlyn Canterbury said that the needs of the College were more along the lines of infrastructure. Expressing optimism at the chance to work with the new Government, Canterbury spoke of a comprehensive budget prepared for the School year, and a five-year plan for modernizing PC.“There are things that definitely need to be fixed. We have our 2015 budget and our 2016 submission,Cheap Jerseys Wholesale, which speak to our expectations about what needs (work). First and foremost is infrastructural support, including the aesthetics of the school, repairs, a swimming pool,Cheap NFL Jerseys Authentic, parking lot for the teachers, and a multipurpose hall. We do not have one, so whenever there is a function it is held in the dining hall,” Canterbury said. She also spoke of the food service department,Cheap Authentic NFL Jerseys, which, according to the principal was badly in need of modernization. However, Canterbury explained that the needs of the institution were prioritized in the five-year plan. There were cultural performances on display including dances from current students of the school and a skillful rendition of the National songs from the School’s Calypso steelband which got only two months notice to practise. The School was opened in 1985, just after L.F.S. Burnham had died. The first students were selected from the top two percent of candidates in the Secondary Schools Entrance Examination (SSEE). The prospective students were also subjected to a regimented evaluation process. However, the admission standards have dropped over the years, with students being allowed to transfer to the school.

A spike in the incidence of malaria is anticipated in the mining regions of Guyana, as efforts are made to intensify the vector control operation there.? This is according to officials within the Vector Control Services Department of the Ministry of Health who have explained that the bolstered effort is linked to the gold rush activities associated with the rise in the price of gold.Since the latter part of last year the Ministry of Health has been gauging and infiltrating the mining regions with the aim of keeping the surge in malaria at bay.Newly appointed Director of the Vector Control Services within the Health Ministry,Cheap NBA Jerseys China, Dr Reyaud Rahman, said that the efforts were intensified at the start of this week. He disclosed that a team, comprising a Senior Vector Control Officer, a Microscopist and a driver, from the Central Malaria Unit, was dispatched to Mahdia, Region Eight, as part of this effort which is being dubbed an Emergency Operation. This strategic move, according to Dr Rahman, is being undertaken in collaboration with those persons employed in the Vector Control Department of the Region.“They will be going out with our senior person as the supervisor and basically they will be doing fogging in Mahdia, indoor residual spraying, reviving of some health clubs and Community Councils and they will also be distributing some treated bed nets to mining camps,” said Dr Rahman. The Region, since the commencement of this year, was in receipt of approximately 5,000 of these nets of which about 2,000 have already been distributed to residents and mining camps. Some of the remaining nets will be distributed to mining camps that have not yet been covered by regional vector control officers, disclosed Dr Rahman. However, he noted that the existing efforts are sometimes undermined since some of the targets for bed nets refuse to utilise them. The treated bed nets are procured by the Ministry of Health at a cost of about US$50 each.“A lot of people,NFL Jerseys China, particularly the miners, know the importance of the nets but they don’t use them. They know the importance of the nets but they prefer to leave them with family,” said the Vector Services Director. In order to address this challenge,Supply Authentic NFL Jerseys, a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with various entities, including the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association, the Geology and Mines Commission and the Forestry Commission. Efforts are being made to bring on board the Forest Products Association and the Women Miners’ Association. This move, according to Dr Rahman,Cheap Jerseys, is expected to “strengthen our activities. We recognise that we need partners because if the miners are not going to listen to us then we believe that other persons must come on board because at the end of the day, when they are not producing because they are not healthy it impacts these organisations and the whole country and we look as if we are not doing our job.”? The Vector Services Director said that collaboration has been proving to be excellent even as he disclosed that the vector control workers have already been able to establish good relations with officials from the collaborating organisations.“We just need to scale up our activities a bit more to make an even more meaningful impact,” added Dr Rahman. As part of the scaled up efforts Regional Vector Control Coordinator, Keith Moore, informed that vector control teams were dispatched in a Regions-wide mission to assist the regional malaria teams in an attempt to carry out some surveys. This, he said, is required since there are limitations in the Region in this regard. “So we will go to all of the Regions in the areas we consider to be hot spot areas…those are areas where there is large transmission of malaria and we will carry out interventions like spraying, mass blood surveys and investigations,” disclosed Moore, who has been within the department for more than four decades. With Mahdia and its surrounding areas being the initial target, Moore revealed that there are plans to move on to the Kamarang area as well. “When we are finished we will go to other areas specifically Regions One,Cheap NFL Jerseys, Seven and Parts of Region Nine too. So our plate will be quite filled for a couple of months…”He intimated that there is likely to be a noticeable spike of cases since the mission will see the vector control teams reaching to locations that were previously inaccessible.“We will see some positive cases, so before it dips it will get higher and you know when cases start to rush up everybody will say there is a problem….but it is just that we are covering areas that were never covered before.”Once treate
