Members of the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) turned out in numbers at the Parliament Building yesterday to commemorate another period which is identified with the worker’s struggles and achievements led by National Hero,Chris Chelios Jersey, Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow (Skibby),Cheap Jerseys, the father of Trade Unionism in Guyana and the British Commonwealth.The Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow Monument, Parliament Building, Stabroek.Mayor Hamilton Greene who addressed the gathering stated that when the Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow’s Monument was erected on the grounds of Parliament Building in December 1964, it was “unveiled with discord” where both the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and the GTUC boycotted the event because the Government of that time did not seek to consult or involve these parties about who would be selected to build the monument and the location of where it would be erected.He explained that from that era to now “things have gone up and down” and that young people should be more knowledgeable about their background since this would help in the future of Guyana.Mayor Greene implored the GTUC to apply immediately to have? radio stations set up since “Guyana is the only country in the West with only one radio station which is state controlled”.The gathering of GTUC workers along with members of other Trade Union Organizations at the lawns of Parliament Building,Cheap Jerseys Store, Stabroek,Cheap Jerseys, as they participate in the GTUC Wreath Laying Ceremony 2011.Kathy Fowler of the GTUC’s Women’s Advisory Committee stated that this activity of wreath laying would kick start the week of activities held to commemorate the works of Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow, which are evident not only in Guyana but throughout the Caribbean.She discussed the current situation of work that women have to endure and conditions which they have to work under while imploring the gathering to stand firm and assist in whatever way they could to curb these situations and trends.Also speaking at the wreath laying ceremony yesterday was General Secretary of the GTUC,Brian Urlacher Bears Jersey, Lincoln Lewis, who explained that this year’s activity was a good beginning since last year there were two wreath laying ceremonies.He stated that his organisation is prepared to hold hands against the trials and tribulations that haunt the nation and it is imperative that we want change and will work towards this.Lewis gave a synopsis of the life and works of Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow starting from his school days to his involvement in workers’ struggles, leading to his death and all he achieved in his lifetime.
