“A nation that doesn’t know its heritage has no identity”- National Trust In observation of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)Culture Minister Frank Anthony and NTG CEO, Nirvana Persaud unveiling one of the plaquesInternational Day of Monuments and Sites, the National Trust of Guyana (NTG) in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport has created a unique way to educate the public about Guyanese heritage.Under the theme ‘Celebrating Guyana’s Patrimony: A trail of our built heritage’, yesterday’s ceremony saw Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport,Cheap Adidas NHL Jerseys, Frank Anthony, unveiling five plaques, which will be erected at villages along the East Coast Demerara (ECD).The signs were specifically designed to provide information on the role that each village played in the 1823 Demerara Slave Revolt. Some of the villages include Turkeyen, Bachelors Adventure and Mahaica.Students from St. Agnes Primary, Winfer Gardens Primary, St. Angela’s Primary, St. John’s College, and the Kuru Kuru Training Centre were all in attendance to get the first glimpse of the signs.NTG’s Chief Executive Officer, Nirvana Persaud explained that although the actual date for the observation is April 18, the ministry and NTG wanted to make sure that schoolchildren had the opportunity to visit each of the exhibitions before they were transported to the various villages.“The whole world will be doing something like this for their respective countries, so this is our way of giving back to our country.” She added that there are usually all sorts of events to recognise the nation’s heritage, such as exhibitions, walks, songs and lecturers, and yesterday’s activity was an interactive exhibition for the students.She explained that “these signs are all a part of the NTG’s public awareness campaign to sensitise the public on our heritage,” since “a nation that doesn’t know its heritage has no identity.”Persaud stressed that “these exhibitions focus on Guyana’s built and tangible heritage… it is to ensure that we understand the sites that we see, and the heritage of our country.”Minister Anthony reminded the youthful gathering that it is important that we preserve our heritage as Guyanese.
