Three outstanding women honoured for their role in bauxite industryBy Enid Joaquin Mothers in Linden were on Sunday evening serenaded by some of the community’s best talented vocalists including the veteran Winston Caesar, Diana Chapman, Malika Boyd, Kevon Lorrimer, Andella Alexander, Sandra Ramsey, Shellon Gallay, Clayton Smyrna and Kemmianna Garnett.Dianne Moore (blue dress), Sue Rogers (centre) and Lorraine Inniss.Other performers included Ryan Hoppie, Randolph and Wanaka Arrindel, Pastor Richard McDonald and Calvin Burnett.It was the eleventh annual Mother’s Day show hosted by Eusi and Darti, to grace the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground.One of the highlights of the evening was an electrifying performance by Diana Chapman who serenaded the oldest mother in the early segment of the event. Winston Ceasar and Calvin Burnett battled for vocal supremacy. In the process, they provided awesome entertainment for hungry patrons.Adding to the excitement was renowned comedian Kurt Jardine (Chow Pow) who performed the duties as Master of Ceremonies.Patrons certainly got their money’s worth, and quite a few insisted that waiting until next year for such quality entertainment is too long.“We need things like these to happen more often; we need quality entertainment and that is what we got (Sunday night),” one patron quipped. Many others agreed.Punctuating the entertainment aspect of the evening was the presentation of prizes to the oldest and youngest mothers, and the honoring of three outstanding mothers in the community. Starting out in the automotive, electrical and mechanical trades, Moore later settled for millwrighting upon completion of her apprenticeship.Upon joining the bauxite Plant Division she said, that she had to get tough to be among the men working there.At the time there were no women outside the offices; only strong men ventured into certain areas in the Bauxite Plant in the 1980s, according to Moore.Proving her competency in carrying out the heavy work within the bauxite plant, Moore became a work planner. By the time Linmine closed operations, she was appointed Chief Planner in the plant in 2003.After OMAI Bauxite took over the Linden operations she was subsequently promoted to Foreman in the Machine Shop and still holds that position today, after serving in the bauxite industry for forty-plus years.Moore said that being a woman who has worked for so long among men, it is difficult to find her-self working with women. She is the proud mother of one.SUE ROGERS a mother of six began working in a male dominated trade in 1989 after she was selected for a training programme to become an electrician.She subsequently gained employment in the rewinding section of the Electrical Shop. In 2003 she was retrenched from Linmine, but regained employment when OMAI took over the bauxite industry in 2004. She is still presently employed with the bauxite industry.Her main task has been rewinding and testing starters.Rogers acknowledged that this proved a great challenge and threat, as the means of testing left much to be desired with 440 Volts always being a concern should things go wrongLORRAINE INNISS was a Guymine apprentice between the years 1980 and 1985.
