NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – Kelvin Chase, an accused corrupt policeman, was refused bail yesterday.Chase was slapped with three charges for offences allegedly committed on September 19— demanding money with menace; robbery under arms, and simple larceny of a firearm.On the day of the offences, he allegedly stole a .38 revolver and six matching rounds from the Central Police Station at Coburg Street in New Amsterdam, all the property of the Guyana Police Force. His client, he said, has been a member of the Guyana Police Force for six years, and has an impeccable record.According to the defence attorney, the accused was on duty on the day in question and was issued the firearm by the station officer.“In fact, he was given the keys to uplift the revolver, so he didn’t steal any revolver, as the police are alleging.”The lawyer argued that the nature and gravity of the offence should not form the basis for asking the court to deny the granting of bail.Mr. Rajkumar pointed to the virtual complainants, who he said are before the Reliance Magistrate’s Court for allegedly assaulting persons.He said that his client was injured and was in police custody since September 19.
