THE Guyana Postal and Telecommunication Workers’ Union (GPTWU) held an award and presentation ceremony Thursday, in honour of Andrew “Stonewall” Jackson at its headquarters in East Street, South Cummingsburg.The Past Presidents, General Secretaries, and those who made significant contributions to the union and long and dedicated service were also awarded.President of GPTWU, Harold Shepherd, said that Andrew Jackson was a country boy from Mahaica who joined the Postal Service at age fifteen in 1921 and rose to the position of Town Postman when he founded the Post Office Workers’ Union on October 6, 1937.There is no evidence of any serious attempt to organise rank and file government workers in a bonafide Trade Union before Jackson did. White and blue collar government employees had been affiliated to the B.G. Teachers Association and the Civil Service Association, but Andrew went a step further.Post office workers had been hard-working as any other at the turn of the 20th Century. Their work life was governed by a regime of regulations that inspired strict discipline while wages were uninspiring.The Post Office Workers’ Union which was registered on June 30, 1938, as Union # 6 had served as a bright green light for all rank and file government employees. By the end of 1938, employees of the Transport and Harbours Department, the Medical Service and other subordinate government workers became unionised.Thereafter, the foundation of the Federation of Unions of Government Employees, F.U.G.E., was laid. Andrew Jackson had endured many disappointments during the initial years of the Post Office Workers’ Union. In 1939, he was joined by G.E.
