A march from the University of Guyana (UG) to downtown Georgetown will mark the start of the fourth week of industrial action by workers of the tertiary institution. This is according to a joint statement issued by the Presidents of the University of Guyana Senior Staff Association (UGSSA) and the University of Guyana Workers Union, Dr. Mellissa Ifill and Mr. Bruce Haynes, respectively. The Unions are also insisting that full strike action will continue indefinitely.The Unions have already secured police permission for the planned march which according to them is one intended to gain solidarity and to bring about further public awareness of the plight of lecturers and ancillary staff, as well as students at the University.It is expected that the striking workers will assemble at the gates of the campus at 08:30 hours on Monday and commence marching by 09:00 hours. “All are strongly urged to come,Kyrie Irving Jersey, including those who choose to work,” said Dr. Ifill who also noted that “we will have vehicles following for those who might want to take a rest.”The march will start north along Turkeyen road from UG to the railway embankment road, west along the railway embankment road to Sheriff Street; south along Sheriff Street to Sandy Babb Street; west along Sandy Babb Street into Vlissengen Road; South along Vlissengen Road to Brickdam and West along Brickdam to Manget Place (the Weslyan Bible College).EFFORTS TO RESOLVE CRISISAccording to the Unions, “we have and will continue to pursue all avenues to resolve this crisis.” The crisis, which is being alluded to, is the failure of the University’s administration to honour a demand for a 60 per cent across the board increase and a subsequent 25 per cent across the board increase,J.R. Smith Jersey, neither of which found favour with the Administration.The University had in fact offered the workers a five per cent increase for this year and 10 per cent for the following two years, an offer that the workers have rejected. We are still being asked to return before negotiations can commence with an outer limit of June 30 proposed for the conclusion of negotiations. We could only reject that proposal.”Union executives also attended two meetings called by the University’s Student Society involving both the Unions and the Administration.? The UGSS wants classes to resume without delay and is concerned because students are operating in an atmosphere of extreme uncertainty. “Both parties apprised the students of their proposals for a return to UG’s version of normalcy (as the situation at UG can’t be described as normal!),” added the statement as he pointed out that “one proposal forwarded by the UGSS that staff found reasonable was the complete closure of the University for one week, while both sides talked to each other and hopefully agreed terms of resumption.”The Unions had in fact sought the intervention of the Ministry of Labour to broker an agreement.
