In a situation where one case is too many, the country is recording in excess of 300 cases of sexual abuse meted out to young children, both males and females, in just a few months.This translates to more than one a day.There has been a 65 percent increase in the number of reported cases of sexual offences from January to the end of August as compared to the same period last year.Police statistics have shown that just within the month of July last, 36 reports of rape were made, taking the total up to 243 for the first seven months of this year. By August, the figure had climbed to 271.The same period last year (January to August) reported 164 rape cases.However, the Child Care and Protection Agency has in its possession, statistics showing 334 reported cases of child molestation from January to July.And, all of these cases have been forwarded to the Guyana Police Force.Head of the agency, Ann Greene, said that no child should be exposed to any form of sexual abuse.“It robs children of their childhood. It robs them of the person they would have become.”Greene explained that reports have shown that most of the young victims are between the ages of 14 and 18 years old.
