More than US$300 million has been invested in bauxite mining in Guyana and another US$150 million is expected to be plugged into the operation, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Natural Resource and the Environment yesterday. The assertion comes on the heels of pronouncements made by officials of A Partnership of National Unity (APNU) at a recent press conference.APNU had contended that the nation is being robbed of the benefits of a US$6 billion deposit at Block 37 in Region Ten.According to the statement which attempts to rebut the claims of APNU, about the operations of BOSAI and RUSAL, not only are there plans for massive investment but no single entity is given full control of the local deposits and Region Ten and other areas are set to benefit in terms of employment.Among the entities included in the industry are Bosai, First Bauxite Corporation and Bauxite Corporation of Guyana Inc (BCGI). “Bauxite Corporation of Guyana Inc. is currently exploring deposits in the Berbice area, while First Bauxite Corporation is much more advance with the company’s exploration and mine development phases,Cheap China Jerseys Authentic,” the statement addedIt was also revealed that there are application by a number of companies for Prospecting Licences for Bauxite ore deposits in Regions Three, Six and Ten,Cheap Adidas NHL Jerseys, and decisions made will be done based on sound and technical evaluation taken into account the need to maximize benefits to Guyana. The statement adds, too, that “RUSAL,Cheap Jerseys, Omai and BOSAI stood all the financial uncertainties for reinvigorating the bauxite industry which was on the verge of collapse.”Speaking to massive investment plans,Brian Poole Falcons Jersey, the statement said that “First Bauxite intends to invest in excess of US$180 M…this will see hundreds of new jobs in Region 10 and elsewhere and other spin off.”Bosai Mineral Guyana Inc. has already expressed its willingness to expand its operations creating over 400 new jobs for the residents of Linden and its environs, as well as investing in an apprenticeship programme set to commence in 2013, the statement added. It was disclosed too that Bosai Mineral Guyana Inc. currently will be expanding Linden operations with the intention of facilitating new products on the bauxite market.First Bauxite, on the other hand, controls a large area in Guyana’s historical coastal bauxite belt, including the Bonasika Mining License and the Essequibo PGGS Prospecting Permit. The Company’s Bankable Feasibility Study Update, according to the statement,China Jerseys NFL, defines and confirms the economic viability of an operation based on sequential mining of two bauxite deposits (Bonasika 6 and Bonasika 7) over a mine life of 36 years.According to APNU’s Executive Member Lance Carberry, in most countries the modern approach to the management of natural resources, particularly with mining resources, is that a company is asked to present its developmental programme for over a period of 20 years. On the basis of an agreed programme reserves are then made available,Cheap Air Max 90 Shoes, Carberry said. According to him, RUSAL had in fact made a number of promises which should have already seen it building an aluminium plant, an undertaking which has not yet been realised. But according to the statement, the vision is to ensure that there is much more value added activities to optimize the utilization of bauxite ore. “We have something so unique. Today, South America has over 5,000 birds and there are less than 10,000 birds in the world. The South American continent holds more than half of the world’s birds and North Amazon holds 2,340 birds – that means about quarter of the birds in the entire world are located in just six countries: Guyana, Brazil, French Guiana, Venezuela, Colombia and Suriname.”- Gajendra Nauth Narine (Andy)By Desilon DanielsThey can be found in a little office located on Light Street, Alberttown. The room is lit by a single fluorescent bulb and is cramped haphazardly with furniture. Around them, the walls are plastered with detailed maps and posters of brightly coloured birds; some shelves are stacked with pamphlets and thick publications, a few feathers tucked away inside of books. One of the birds in the Bird Society’s foster programme. For some, such a surrounding could be considered sheer confusion. However, this office is a second home for many of the members of the Guyana Amazon Tropical Birds Society (GATBS). The non-governmental organisation is commonly known as the Guyana Bird Society and is filled with persons who have dedicated years of their lives to birding.Among them is Gajendra Nauth Narine, fondly known to all as Andy. He is currently the vice president of GATBS and has been with the Society since its formation in 2000.In an interview with Kaieteur News, Andy spoke about the ups and downs witnessed by the Society since its creation 15 years ago.According to him, the Society started in 2000 but was not officially certified as an NGO until 2005. He said that the entity began as a means to help at-risk youths channel their energies positively.“We started taking the kids out to look at birds and helping them to put together lists of birds around the capital city. I recognised that it started to motivate them to get off the streets and go into the garden and parks,Kyrie Irving Jersey,” he said.He went on that the youths were eventually removed from the streets by the then Guyana Government to a facility on the West Bank of Demerara. Though this saw the Society losing about half of its members and visits from the youths became infrequent, the Society nonetheless grew. Currently, it has members in all of Guyana’s administrative regions. In total, there are about 126 members, but there are fewer than 10 active members who work with the Society day-to-day.For the members, birding presented the perfect opportunity to both promote tourism and educate the public. This is especially true for a country such as Guyana.According to Andy, “we are sitting in an important birding destination.”Andy Narine (left) and GATBS Acting President Terry Plummer with two of the birds. He continued, “We have something so unique. Today, South America has over 5,000 birds and there are less than 10,000 birds in the world. The South American continent holds more than half of the world’s birds and North Amazon holds 2,340 birds – that means about quarter of the birds in the entire world are located in just six countries: Guyana, Brazil, French Guiana, Venezuela, Colombia and Suriname.”He pointed out that this information is not commonly known – something that the Society is working on changing. One of its primary goals is to educate the public. He explained, “Our interest is Guyana; if we don’t help the people, the people won’t help the habitat, the habitat won’t protect the birds and we want to keep protecting our birds.”He said that the Society long recognised the importance of providing up-to-date and factual information.“We were created to house and educate Guyanese throughout our 83,000 square miles,” Andy emphasised. “We keep that information to help support the education sector and we are working along with the tourism sector for a number of years,Chile Soccer Jersey,” he said.Currently,Wholesale NFL Jerseys, the Society has an impressive database on local birds, with over 900 documented species.“Our society is basically built to give information to people who need it. For instance, we found in the last seven or eight years, most of the Biology students and Zoology students utilised our data because of its accessibility,” Narine said.He further stressed that Guyana is not living up to its birding potential and is not making full use of the niche market.“It’s not only about conservation on the local scene, but we have to recognise that we have to benefit economically through our conservation interests by having a product to support eco-tourism,” he said.Nonetheless, the Society continues with its efforts and has significantly contributed to birding tourism in Guyana.Andy explained that the Society works with a number of international organisations to help track not only Guyana’s resident birds, but also its migrant birds tha

Former President, Bharrat Jagdeo, days before he demitted Office in 2011, allocated a number of radio frequencies to friends, family and party, including a company owned exclusively by an American citizen. This occurred despite the fact that Chairperson of the Guyana National Broadcast Authority (GNBA), Bibi Shadick, had said this could not be done.Bibi ShadickIn fact she had told operators that companies that have 50 per cent or more ownership, by a non-Guyanese, would be ineligible to receive licences.Shadick in November last year, called in all operators and told them that they would have to re-apply for licences, be it radio or TV.She informed the operators that they would have to ensure that their companies are incorporated, thus making them shareholding companies with a minimum two directors. This posed a problem for at least one operator who had applied and had as a partner, a Guyanese who was a US citizen and was listed as the 50 per cent owner of the company.According to Michael Bess, owner of Atlantic Cable Network (ACN), he had in the past worked with a Guyanese associate, who later migrated to the US and subsequently gained US citizenship.According to Bess,Wholesale NFL Jerseys, he had set up a company and named his associate, who by this time re-migrated to Guyana, as 50 per cent owner of that company.Shadick objected, and on those grounds the company was refused a licence. The same, however, did not seem to apply to Telcor and Cultural Broadcasting Inc which is owned 100 per cent by an American citizen. This company was incorporated by Attorney-at-Law, Jaya Manickchand, the sister of Government Minister, Priya Manickchand, in 2009.The Articles of Incorporation, part of the public records, list as a Director for the Company, Kamini Persaud, the wife of then Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud.Kamini Persaud, is also the niece of Jagdeo. The other director was listed as Ruth Baljit, the sister of Minister Persaud with her listed address as 1106, Virginia Avenue, New York, US.The company was incorporated with 500,000 shares and each annual return filed, lists Baljit,Wholesale NFL Jerseys China, a US citizen as the sole shareholder. This means that the company Telcor and Cultural Broadcasting Inc. is on paper, owned exclusively by a US Citizen.Kaieteur News understands, too,Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Arsenal Jersey UK, that the company was struck off the Registrar’s Companies List for failing to file annual returns. It was restored to the Companies List in October, days before Jagdeo would have approved it for five radio frequencies.Dharamchand Depoo, the Company Secretary uplifted the Licence for Baljit who lives in the United States.Jagdeo’s gifting of Guyana’s national resources, the airwaves, to certain close friends,Wholesale Jerseys China, family and his political party,MLB Jerseys From China, has come under increasing scrutiny following the forced disclosure by the Prime Minister in the National Assembly earlier this year. The bending of the rules to allow a non-Guyanese approval for the operation of new radio stations to especially close friends of Jagdeo and the ruling party, would be significant as there had been strong objections from existing media houses.Several prominent, independent media entities including Kaieteur News, Stabroek News, CNS 6, WRHM 7, RBS 13, Capitol News, HBTV 9 and GWTV 2 were all bypassed by Jagdeo.Yet, Jagdeo also gave to Dr. Ranjisinghi ‘Bobby’ Ramroop, his close friend, his party’s newspaper, the Mirror,Cheap MLB Jerseys China, five frequencies each.He approved frequencies to a number of others but only allowed them one frequency each, limiting them in their coverage. The former President has also come under criticisms for granting cable television licences to two companies –E-Networks Inc. and Quark Communications. Both companies have Directors and shareholders with close links to him. Both companies along with Global Technology, on which Ramroop, his close friend, sits as a Director, are now set to receive Telecommunications licences. These will pave the way for a small group of friends, all close friends of Jagdeo, to control the media and telecommunications industry – an industry worth billions of dollars and which was virtually handed to them for free.

…launches 2009 outlookThe Theatre Guild, which has found itself in a financial quagmire, says it is still owed $1.5 million by the government for performances held at the Guild Playhouse during the Caribbean Festival of Arts (Carifesta). The disclosure came Friday evening as the Guild made a passionate appeal for help in the forms of sponsorship, new membership and volunteer services. One of the sculptures which were displayed as part of the Roots and Culture exhibition of art Friday evening at the Theatre Guild. Nine months after Guyana hosted Carifesta, it was Dr. Paloma Mohamed, the Festival’s Artistic Director (a position she described as being “sometimes thorny”), who disclosed that the Guild was in need of the money to help meet its biggest liability –? some $3 million to the Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL).Dr .Mohamed was one of three members of the Guild’s management committee who laid out the state of the Guild’s financial position. The management committee would like to see revenues increased from $5 million to $12 million, if the Guild is to become financially sustainable.According to Dr Mohamed, electricity cost burns a chunk of funds, averaging some $300,000 a month. But the Guild has a plan that could possibly cut that cost in half.? The high electricity cost is because of the size of the transformer that was installed during the renovations. The renovations were completed in time for Carifesta, and marked the return to activity at the Playhouse, after a hiatus of over two decades. The installation of a smaller transformer will reduce the electricity cost until the Guild is able to negotiate a billing system that is reflective of the Guild’s operation as a not-for-profit organisation. The Guild is currently billed as a light industry. The estimated cost to replace the transformer is $780,NFL Jerseys China,000.The Guild’s second priority involves upgrades to the performance areas, which are needed for the facility to mount quality stage productions. In this regard, the Guild needs ladders to set up lights and sound systems ($120,Cheap NFL Jerseys,000); a system for effective communication between backstage and the light and sound technicians ($150,Wholesale Stitched Jerseys,000); an across stage fly bar ($150,000); fire-proof curtains ($500,000); and purchase and installation of an on-stage cyclorama ($500,000).The Roots and Culture Jazz ensemble performs at the Theatre Guild Friday evening. For the upgrades to the dressing rooms,Brian Gionta Jersey, including mirrors, closets and iron boards, an estimated $170, 000 is needed.? The Guild’s other priority is for upgrades and maintenance of the rehearsal area and the Playhouse office. This will cost an estimated $232,000.According to the Guild, there is also the need to fund the salaries of a Playhouse Manager ($1.2M for one year) who can market the Guild and its programmes effectively in order to generate optimal revenue from these areas. In addition, the Guild is seeking support for its planned theatrical productions. The cost of putting on one production is $400,Wholesale NFL Jerseys,000. The Guild also estimates that its advertising programme for 2009 will amount to $1.2 million.Chairman of the Guild’s management committee, Russell Lancaster, said if these targets are met the Guild would be able to become functional and sustainable.Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Major General (retired) Joseph Singh said a total of $68 million cash was raised for the rehabilitation of the Guild’s Playhouse. This was in addition to $11 million in kind, and the volunteer services of many,Cheap Jerseys Authentic, including Bert Carter, the engineer who spearheaded the restoration of the Playhouse.Singh said the restoration of the Playhouse presents a platform for the development of 21st century theatre in Guyana, and for the Guild to become the “crucible of culture” in the country. He said too that the Guild needs to bring forward a new cadre of players in theatre, including playwrights, actors and actresses. The launch of the Guild’s “Outlook for 2009” was poorly attended. The few, who attended the launch of the Guild’s strategic plan, enjoyed a visual art exhibition and Caribbean jazz music, compliments of the Roots and Culture Jazz ensemble. The Theatre Guild currently has 80 members and hopes to double that by 160. The Guild offers individual membership at $4,000 annually and corporate membership at $40,000 annually.

Chief Fire Officer, Marlon Gentle, has said that the victim of Wednesday evening’s fire in Stanleytown, 52-year-old Hazel Johnson, may have been burnt to death while she was asleep on her bed.He added that investigations have revealed that the fire started in the hallway, just next to the bedroom of the Lot 30 Mudlot Stanleytown residence in which Johnson was the only occupant at the time. The fire started some time after 20:30 hrs in the midst of a long power outage in New Amsterdam on Wednesday evening. The woman shared the home with a few others but they were at church at the time.Neighbours and residents from the area tried to rescue the woman from the building but this proved unsuccessful since they were reprimanded by the fire fighters in light of safety concerns.Firefighters worked hard to prevent the massive blaze which illuminated the night sky from afar, from spreading to the Home Economics School and Ministry of Education, located next door.According to Gentle,Cheap Jerseys Free Shipping, the woman was rendered helpless as she may have been sleeping when the fire started and could have awoken when it was too late.“She was overcome on her bed. We found the remains of a lamp. Based on eyewitnesses the glare of the lamp was seen. Something perhaps went wrong with the lamp,Supply Authentic NFL Jerseys,” the Chief Fire Officer said. There was a fire hydrant in front of the home but that was not in working order. It had been covered in mud. Gentle noted this fact and said that the town of New Amsterdam does not have proper fire hydrants. He went on to say that it is not the Guyana Fire Service (GFS)’s responsibility to maintain the fire hydrants. He added that the GFS has bought tankers in light of non- working fire hydrants, a situation that pervades much of Guyana, but tankers would not alleviate the requirement for fire- fighting.Hazel JohnsonHe added that the building was large and built of wood. Also, it sat close to the riverside hence it was exposed to the wind that fuelled the blaze. After water from all the fire tenders ran out, men were seen trying to use a bucket brigade and access water from a nearby trench. The woman’s charred remains were brought out on a stretcher shortly after 10pm and quickly taken away to a funeral home. The house was once owned by the late Ilene King nee Benons, who owned the once popular Victoria (Benons) commercial school in New Amsterdam.Kaieteur News understands that the two-storey wood and concrete building is now owned by overseas-based relatives. The building is divided into two living quarters with Johnson occupying the front section and one Jean Headley who is in her later 50s and her 21-year-old niece Latoya Plass occupying the back half.It is understood that Johnson had been renting the premises for about two years. She leaves to mourn her two sons Clairmont, 35, who resides in the USA,NFL Jerseys From China, and Chris Humphrey, 37, who lives in Guyana and works in the Interior. He had reportedly visited his mother five days ago. Johnson who had limited vision in one eye was said to be suffering from cataract. Her remains were found on the lower flat of the building, she apparently fell through the burnt out floor since the inside door was barred. La Toya Plass, with her lone possessions,Cheap NFL Jerseys China, and her aunt Jean HeadleyAt the scene this morning relatives including the dead woman’s nephew, Gary Johnson, and crime scene investigators revisited the premises. They found bones suspected to be limbs of the deceased and removed them to the funeral parlour.Jean Headley,Wholesale Cheap Jerseys, had been occupying the premises for the pasts 18 years. She told the media on Thursday that at the time of the fire she and her niece were in church. She got a call that her house was on fire.Returning home immediately she saw the entire building engulfed in flames. The distraught woman stated that she lost everything in the blaze. “I don’t have anything. All that I have is what is on my back,” she stated.“I only collected my pension from NIS, yesterday. That too gone”.The woman stated that she had applied for a house but was told that she could not get one, because she does not have any children. Her niece Latoya Plass who has been living with her for a number of years, managed to save a few pieces of home clothes which was left to dry on a line outside.Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), Timothy Austin, who was asked about the non-functioning fire hydrants, particularly the one outside the destroyed house, told Kaieteur News that maintaining fire hydrants in New Amsterdam and anywhere in Guyana does not fall under their mandate. The Town Clerk of

By Latoya Giles Heavily shackled and clad in white trousers and shirt, police brought a nervous and shaking Chaka Chase to court yesterday. Chase is alleged to have murdered Police Corporal Romain Cleto on April 27,last,Cheap Wholesale Jerseys, at Georgetown. Chase made his court appearance yesterday before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.Murder accused Chaka Chase yesterday as he was leaving the Magistrates’ court. The accused was represented by Attorneys at Law Nigel Hughes and James Bond.? Hughes told the court that the police did not take statements from witnesses who could confirm his client’s alibi at the time that the shooting death of the policeman took place. The lawyer said that he had since sent those statements to the Director of Public Prosecutions. It was at this point that the Magistrate questioned the Police Prosecutor about whether any advice was sought from the DPP in the matter. The Prosecutor told the Court that the DPP’s advice was not given. The statements which will show that Chase was elsewhere when the shooting occurred were given by several eyewitnesses, including a police officer. The court was told that Director of Public Prosecutions, Shalimar Ali-Hack,Wholesale Authentic Jerseys Outlet, is expected to review the entire file before the case comes up again on Thursday.Hughes further told the court that his client had visited the police station on a number of occasions after his name was being mentioned as a suspect. He was arrested then released after 72 hours. He was again arrested on Thursday last and without any legal advice from the DPP,Cheap Air Max Shoes, the Police decided to charge him with murder.According to the prosecution,Cheap Air Max 90 Men Shoes, gun powder residue was found on Chase’s hands after it was swabbed by the Police. However Chase’s lawyer Nigel Hughes questioned the truth behind that statement. He told the Court that he does not understand why the Police would then release the man if they had found gun residue on his hands when he was swabbed on the same night of the murder after he turned himself in.The Attorney said that the Guyana Police Force has once again instituted charges without a proper investigation being conducted.Hughes said that the Guyana Police Force seems to be rushing to another form of erroneous judgment, in which it is bringing to court a young man who will be charged with murder without even beginning to conduct even the most rudimentary elements of investigation. He added that he had read in the press that the person who allegedly committed the act was someone of either Portuguese or East Indian decent. His client, Chaka Chase,Cheap Jerseys From China, is Rastafarian and of African descent.“It seems to be another example where a young urban citizen is charged for an offence where there is an inadequate investigation,” Hughes stated. The lawyer maintained that it was not too late for the police to take the statements from the eyewitnesses.Attorney James Bond in his address told the court that there were burn marks about Chase’s body, which is a clear indication of him being “electrically shocked” and tortured.Cleto was approaching the vehicle on foot when the occupants opened fire with what is believed to be an AK-47 assault rifle and a nine-millimeter handgun. Corporal Cleto was buried with full military honours. Chase was remanded and is expected to return to court on Thursday.Relatives of Chase, mainly his sisters and aunts,Cheap NFL Football Jerseys, immediately broke down as they heard that he was remanded. His relatives swarmed the entrance of the court to get a glimpse of a sobbing Chase.Officers rushed him into the temporary holding facility at the court, before taking him off to the Camp Street Prison. Chase was heard shouting for relatives to briefly hold up his young son.
