Retirees of the Guyana Telecommunications Corporation, (GTC) now Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T),? say they are giving those responsible for owing them over 20 years of pensions, one more option before they take to the streets in protest.Over 130 persons over the age of 60 claim they are owed millions of dollars in pension payments after years of service to the telecommunications industry. It is hoped that the matter of the unpaid/ underpaid pensioners could be taken to Parliament where the government will have to deal with the matter head on.When it was asked why the matter had not gone to court after years of delays, the union’s president Harold Shepherd said that the executive would have changed several times and it was believed that the government would have resolved the matter before taking drastic measures. He said the union never wanted to be confrontational.The former telecoms workers have laid blame on the current administration for neglecting their rights under the Pensions Act. The union said that workers were assured that if they stayed on when GTC was privatized, they would enjoy all benefits, including their full gratuity and pension.Shepherd said that several letters have been sent to government officials including former President Bharrat Jagdeo,Cheap Hockey Jerseys, Cabinet Secretary Roger Luncheon, Finance Minister Ashni Singh and current President Donald Ramotar but, “not even receipt of the correspondence have been acknowledged.”“To date, none of these letters have been responded to,” Shepherd said.? The problem, workers said, started in 1990 when GTC was privatised.The norm was for workers under the GTC to retire at age 55 but the aggrieved pensioners say they were asked to stay on the job until the new pensionable age of 60. They were assured that their services would be treated as “continuous and unbroken and the other conditions of service will not be less favourable than what they previously enjoyed.”Based on the agreement,Jerseys Cheap NFL, the workers stayed on with the private company with the understanding that upon retirement from GT&T, they would receive their pension and gratuity from the present Government through the Ministry of Finance, in keeping with the Pension and Corporation Acts.However, the retirees say they were denied their benefits from the early 90s and when government realized the exorbitant sum of money to be paid out, asked for a compromise where workers to pat them their benefits from 2004, thus denying the retirees of some 13 years of service payment.
