Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry yesterday refused the bail application by lawyer Gregory Gaskin representing surrendered wanted man, Orlando Thom.Thom made his first court appearance on Tuesday before the Chief Magistrate at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court with three offences, two of which are indictable.After listening to a strong challenge put forward by Gaskin, the Magistrate suspended the hearing for yesterday to determine whether the court would grant the accused his pre-trial liberty.His matter was transferred to the Christianburg Magistrates’ Court for May 10.The former national swimmer resides at Old England, Upper Demerara with his mother and other siblings who were present in court yesterday.Corporal Venetta Pindar, on the first hearing, told the court that on March 10; last, the accused held Dexter Parez at gunpoint and demanded that his victim hand over the key for his motor car PMM 9535.As a result the plaintiff became afraid and complied with Thom’s request. To the charge of threatening language to Parez the accused declared his innocence.The prosecution further alleged that 30 minutes later, Thom drove the said car to Nottinghamshire,China Jerseys Cheap, Upper Demerara and abducted Kemani Sharma. The accused then drove the car along the Ituni Public Road and ordered Sharma out of the moving vehicle.Those matters were reported to the police.At this point in proceedings, Attorney Gaskin challenged the prosecution.
